DOB

Today I saw a receipt from the grocery store.  I noticed that I had purchased some alcohol and they actually put the date of birth on the receipt.

I didn’t notice that before.

So I didn’t think about it too much and got ready to shred it.  Then I noticed something odd about the date.

It was ten years later than my birth year.

And I can still buy alcohol.

Cherry Blossom Portraits

These were shot with the D70 and the 50mm, usually wide open with the aperture priority program and an off camera SB-600.  It was a group effort, consisting of great models, eBay, a cooperative sunset, and a very talented lighting assistant.

Full disclosure: These were taken with a construction site in the background.  It’s American University, in the tiny clump of cherry trees just to the side of the School of International Service.  I had to get creative with the framing, but if you look carefully, you can see Nebraska Avenue in the background and the trailers for the construction company.

This photo shoot just makes me want to get a second SB-600.  I’ll have to cruise the Ritz Camera closings and see if one shows up for a decent price.

April Fools

The internet is horrible on April Fool’s day.  It’s best to just leave it alone and then get back to it the day after.

But the usual suspects were pretty good, Blizzard of course had some amazing art to back up their joke.  Qualcomm was surprisingly funny with their wolf pigeons, shark hawks and crocodeagles.  Google Autopilot made me chuckle.

Other than that, I had a really productive day at work, really got a lot done.

Update: SEE WHAT I DID THERE?

Stronger, faster

Well, in adding the weather stripping to Roomba-kun, I found that he may have some damage.  It doesn’t affect the overall performance, he vacuums fine.

It looks like a piece of plastic may have broken off of the inner part of the brush assembly.  I’ll have to take him apart and see if the part I need is available as salvage or as a refurbished part.  Thankfully there is a good Roomba tear-down guide.

Then, then I can rebuild him.

Better.

Stronger.

Although in all seriousness I probably should at least do the firmware upgrade and get a new battery, and replace what looks like the gearbox cover for the brush assembly.

And if I pull this off, I can say that I’ve repaired a robot.

Mobile Solitude

Riding the metro on a Saturday morning is desolate, and I share the train with one other passenger, a gentleman already asleep at one end of the train.

I’m headed for Twinbrook, which is not a long ride, but long enough to get some reading done.  A space opera is in my bag, along with a book about municipal darwinism, and a fantasy novel about assassins.

Most of the trip is underground, and it’s jarring to feel the sunlight on my face when we hit the surface before Grosvenor.  More jarring is the fact that I realize I’m waking up more and more every time the doors open and bring fresh air into the train car.

It’s Twinbrook soon enough and I pack my book into my backpack.  The doors open and I walk over the rain slick hexagons with care.

I think next week will be a longer ride, and I’ll bring more books.
