Disconnect

I’m in the allergist’s office when I realize I’ve left my phone on my desk, charging. “No problem,” I think as I pull out the tablet. Their waiting room has WiFi, so I will simply connect and get back to Twitter and gmail and path.

Then I notice that their connection is not letting me on.

I contemplate asking the receptionist about the WiFi, maybe a router just needs to be rebooted, a cable unplugged and plugged back in again.

but then I realize that sounds desperate, “You know, your internet doesn’t seem to be working, I can, you know, take a look at it.”

And then the full realization hits me.

I have just taken allergy shots, and I cannot leave here for thirty minutes.

I will be without this link, this network, for a full thirty minutes.

And that thought is mildly terrifying.

Technology

So I purchased a Nexus 7. For those playing the home game, it’s the 16GB version.

I have no idea when it gets here, but I’m looking forward to it. I find that the seven inch is the ideal size for everyday carry, not so large that it is unwieldy to take out of a bag, but still large enough to view things comfortably.

Jelly Bean is the unknown here, as I’ve already been playing with Ice Cream Sandwich on a flashed Kindle Fire.

Looking forward to it.

Otakon, day one-ish

And the line standing begins. Did not pre reg due to internet issues, but at least line looks not too long.

Otakon

Due to some last minute encouragement that had nothing to do with the alcohol, I am now heading to Otakon to enjoy some geeky funtimes.

This event will also be the debut of Prof. P. Reginald Lockheed, Adventurer, Bard, Gentleman.

I’ve had this costume on before, but this will be the first time it’s at a non private event. A little nervous about it, but I feel confident that it will go over well.

The Third Day

The third day.

I expected this to be about how great PAX East was, and how wonderful it was to be in Boston again and see old friends.

Instead, this is about my health, an what I’ve learned while traveling.

First thing:

If you depend on a CPAP, after you pack it, put it together all over again to make sure everything is there, then pack it again.

I was missing my quick release valve, which made my CPAP, and my bringing it with me for the eight hour train ride, completely useless. It is also the smallest piece of the entire system, and the machine is inoperable without it.

I am now on my third day without CPAP therapy.

My morning was quite a departure from what I have grown gradually used to over the last several months.

Instead of a mild fatigue and a tired feeling, I felt exhausted this morning. My throat was raw from the snoring.

It still hurts as of this writing.

As much as I have complained about having to use a CPAP, and how I have gained no immediately measurable benefit over the last four months, I think that I needed this time away from it to understand how I used to sleep.

It was a learning experience, and I’m more prepared to travel with my CPAP in the future.

But I won’t soon forget what the CPAP does for me on a nightly basis. Much like other things, I needed to get out of my comfort zone on order to learn something new.

Update: I cannot believe I wrote that whole post out on an iPod Touch keyboard.
