Ukulele Resources

I’m not a musician, but  I love the ukulele chord finder.  Just the chords I need when I need them.  What would be cool is if I could “queue” up chords and have them repeat.

Also awesome is The Ukulele Underground.  I learned a lot about scales and it’s entertaining.  At the same time, even!

But I need to know right now!

If you ever really, really need to know when a video game is going to be released.

No, if you really need to know.  Head over to VGReleases.com.  They will know.

City of Villains

I think one of the best reasons I still play City of Heroes (and Villains) is because of the people.  Which is funny because the reason I’ve left other MMOs is because of the people.  I’ve been playing for nearly five years now and still, I’m surprised and entertained by the humor and creativity displayed by the players of the City of games.

Most of it is due to the setting.

Which is Rhode Island.

Of course, since this is a video game, it happens to be the nexus for all sorts of super powered things happening in the entire world.  As a consequence of that setting, anything goes.  Anything from a knight errant magically transported through time, to a gritty streetwise martial artist that fights crime with his bare hands is fair play in the City of Heroes, and the developers wisely gave you a convenient location for you to put all the juicy details of your heroic or villainous background for other players to read.

Most people (at least in my experience) seem to be older, and it’s many a mission interrupted by a quick chat message, “AFK, putting the kids to bed.” or its like.

Besides, in what other game could I run into “G. Gordon Liddy” and “Neal Patrick Harris?”

Both Villains, of course.

CreepyStalker ™

Thanks to Paulo for the inspiration of the new more descriptive name for Google Latitude.  It’s location sharing, using your phone and best approximation via cell tower triangulation, or the GPS built into your phone.  It’s neat in theory, yet a bit clunky and a little bit awkward on my not so fast phone.  So now you, too can find out where I am.

With my permission, of course.  Although now, it seems less functional and just something to people will have to think about when they’re having extramarital affairs.  Although ATM withdrawals and credit card statements are perfectly capable of providing that same information, although not in real time.

It is strange, because signed up for it with nary a thought, and yet I hesitate at the thought of joining Facebook.  I guess with Latitude, I could always turn off my phone or sign out.  But Facebook seems like a persistent invasion of privacy, even though I know I can set privacy options to hell and back and not ever log in.  I talked about this with Lori, briefly, about a possible government subpoena of Google’s records.  I had to think about it for a while.

Google already knows who my friends are, what I’m searching for, who I’m talking to, who I’m emailing, when I’m doing these things with which friends, what personal documents I edit, and now, they know where I am.

Besides, if the government wanted my location, they can just get the cell tower info from the telcos anyway.  Hell, they may already have it, now that I think about it.  And the more I think about it, the more I realize that we gave up our privacy a long time ago.

It’s just that the internet makes the loss more immediately felt, more apparent.

You know, when you get a gazillion spam messages the next day.

An older tradition

I’m thinking about changing my calling cards.

I know, it’s a strange thing to think about, especially in this interconnected 24/7 social community immersion thing we have going on with twitter, blogs, social networking sites, talking on cell phones, texting on cell phones, newsgroups, instant messages, and chat clients disguised as video games.

But sometimes I feel while, I am able to “keep up” with everyone, I’m not actually taking the time to have a real conversation.

Thus, my calling cards.  I got them a long time ago, when I was in college before the internet and cell phones.  I even have the engraved plate.  You can see on the backs of the cards where the plate “bruises” the paper.

When I visited a friend’s dorm room, I would leave one on their board with a quick message and a date and time.  Professors loved them.  Meeting people was a snap, all I had on my cards was my name so I could put as much or as little information that I wanted on the card.  Handy for study groups.

Now, of course, I can’t just stop by a friend’s house.  We don’t really have visiting hours like we used to.  But the cards could still be handy in other ways.

I’m just looking at fonts now, trying to decide whether or not I add the URL or add a design, like a stylized gear or monkey.  Or a gear and a monkey.  Or a monkey made out of gears.  But not a gear made out of monkeys.

That would be strange.

I could just go incredibly quirky and get plain ivory cards with a QR code.  Because you know, that’ll be timeless.
