Cherry Blossom Portraits

These were shot with the D70 and the 50mm, usually wide open with the aperture priority program and an off camera SB-600.  It was a group effort, consisting of great models, eBay, a cooperative sunset, and a very talented lighting assistant.

Full disclosure: These were taken with a construction site in the background.  It’s American University, in the tiny clump of cherry trees just to the side of the School of International Service.  I had to get creative with the framing, but if you look carefully, you can see Nebraska Avenue in the background and the trailers for the construction company.

This photo shoot just makes me want to get a second SB-600.  I’ll have to cruise the Ritz Camera closings and see if one shows up for a decent price.

An Important Reminder

Today was productive, mainly because I got to take nearly 300 pics.  The new compact flash card seems to be working in the D70.  I was getting image corruption errors with the old 1GB card occasionally, and the new 2GB card seems to be fine so far.

I got some great pictures of people in their kimono as well as some street action.  I enjoy working with people to get portrait although I’m still working on my framing.  I really want a second flash now, I think I’m at the point where I could really use another one for creative lighting.  I did get some great shots during the magic minute yesterday and they look great.

While I have other hobbies, I have a special love for photography because it’s rewarding.

Hearing, “Oh wow,” after I show someone their picture always makes me smile.

That’s why there’s nothing so unnerving to me as the thought of losing pictures, the tiny slices of time and light that I worked so hard to get.  Or alternately, paid zero attention to craftsmanship and took anyway.  Either way they’re still important.

Which reminds me it’s time to do a backup of this machine.

And everyone, please do a back up of your computer.

DSi

Apparently the lowercase “i” stands for what “I’m going to be doing with the DS.”  Not “Interactive” or “Internet.”  I think that means they want it to be more of a multifunction device, instead of simply a handheld gaming console.  I’m hoping that it gets there, but the lack of MP3 support is going to hurt the DSi.  I’m just saying.  If they want me to use it for more than just video games, they’re going to have to at least try.

Mine, in matte black, is on its way from Amazon.  I’m the early adopter that they’re making money from.  I’m looking forward to not carrying cartridges around.  Even though the current cartridges are about the size of a large postage stamp and about as thick as a quarter, it’s just too much to carry around in this modern age.

The era of digital stores, online repositories of small, easily downloadable applications and games, locked to a single platform is already here, has already been here for several years.

I’m just astounded that it took this long to get to this level of  adoption.  I know that carts and proprietary formats won’t ever go away, but at least offer the same software that’s physically available.  As a handheld owner, I know that I’d buy games again just so that I wouldn’t have to carry the media around.  That’s why I like services like Steam and Impulse on the PC.  Impulse I like even more because I don’t even have to be logged in to play the games that I buy from them.

Is that so hard?

The market is there, the companies just need to react to the demand and provide the virtual goods and services.

Roomba redux

So.

Woot.com the other day had the 535 series Roomba for $150 and I bit.  New Roomba just arrived and is now charging where Roomba-kun used to be.  Now I have two robotic vaccuums.  Which may be two too many, but I really don’t care, because robots are awesome.  In all seriousness though, at least I have another robot for vaccuum duty while I repair the broken gear assembly cover on Roomba-kun.

I don’t know how he managed to break that piece, it’s pretty far up in the unit and doesn’t seem to be anything other than a weak piece of plastic.  Of course now I have this feeling that I threw away a “mysterious” piece of plastic a year ago.  It doesn’t matter too much but it’s still bothersome since he does have a sharp jagged piece of plastic on his underside.  It also looks like that piece also protected the gear assembly, since I can peer into its inner workings now.

I have the feeling that’s not supposed to be the case.

The new Roomba came with a brush cleaning tool which is fantastic and should have come with the original Roomba.  I just used it on the old brush and removed so much entangled hair with one swipe.  If you’ve got a Roomba and don’t have the brush cleaning tool, I cannot recommend it enough.  It turns  a disagreeable project into a simple step.

I have the feeling this new one wil be Roomba-chan, considering that the demonstration voice is female.

April Fools

The internet is horrible on April Fool’s day.  It’s best to just leave it alone and then get back to it the day after.

But the usual suspects were pretty good, Blizzard of course had some amazing art to back up their joke.  Qualcomm was surprisingly funny with their wolf pigeons, shark hawks and crocodeagles.  Google Autopilot made me chuckle.

Other than that, I had a really productive day at work, really got a lot done.

Update: SEE WHAT I DID THERE?
