Curiouser and curiouser

A strange sensation came over me as I walked out of the door of the elevator. I took a few steps forward and noticed that the walls seemed older, more yellow. I continued down the hallway, and the vague sensation of “not belonging” came over me. I chalked it up to the holiday season and continued down the hallway.

The lighting was wrong as I walked further down–maybe a light was out and they replaced a soft white bulb with a cool white. I never realized that it could make such a difference.

The children next door had removed their halloween decorations. I smiled. I’d miss them.

It was good to be home. I put my key in the lock and nearly broke the key. It wouldn’t turn.

I looked up.

I was on the wrong floor, attempting to unlock someone else’s apartment.

Some days, it just doesn’t pay to be on auto pilot.
