Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia.  The name for some conjures images of a white clad, rotoscoped prince running, jumping, climbing (and often dying) his way through an underground prison.

Then there was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for the Xbox.  Which was a great reboot for the series.  We’ll pretend that Prince of Persia 3D never happened.

The sequels to Sands of Time were okay.  I never really liked the direction Warrior Within went.  Overall it seemed too grungy, trying too hard to be “edgy” and “serious.”  After just a few hours, I grew tired of the combat and then didn’t come back for the third game in the series, The Two Thrones.  I may come back and revisit them at a later date, but for now I can just read the plot synopses and be done with them. Ze Goggles, Zey are on sale

Those of you on the lookout for an inexpensive Steampunk accessory (So last season!) may want to console themselves with some Restoration Hardware “welder’s goggles.”

Just fun to have around, plus you can be ready for pretend to be a time traveler day next year.  They’re on sale now, but of course their shipping charges are simply egregious.  They will charge you about half the cost of the goggles themselves.

Barring their shipping and handling practices, I can speak for these.  I have a pair or two hanging around.  They do have an elastic band which isn’t ideal, but you can fix that with a trip to your local craft store.

New Habits

I’m trying out a few things with the site.

Like updating.

But as with all things, there will likely be changes.  Things like scheduled updates and frequency are bound too change.  Design, I’m pretty much set on the plain text.  Writing is the focus, but I am toying with the possibility of other types of projects.  Things similar to the Chinatown video or even a podcast.

I’ve set aside time for creating now, and I’m hoping that will turn into a habit.

Birth of a Washingtonian

College really wasn’t an option for me.

Not that it was an impossible thing.  My parents were going to make sure that I went to college.  It was not an option in the fact that it was always assumed that I was going to go.  It was only a matter of where.

Even though we didn’t have enough money to repair a water heater, my parents were going to send me to a private college, not a state school.

That could have saved us some money, but I ended up applying to ridiculous colleges, like Georgetown.  I never really had my heart set on anywhere, so I employed the “shotgun” approach to my application process.  My SAT scores and high school transcript were enough to get me accepted everywhere.

I never had my heart set on anywhere.  Privately, what I was looking for was a way to make the financial burden easier on my parents.  My ultimate decision was American University, primarily because they offered me a good scholarship.

I joked that American was the furthest away from my parents I could get without leaving the country.

My parents said that they could take care of the rest and I had to believe them.

The next thing I know, I’m hopping a plane to Washington DC.

Well, more accurately, I’m late running through a San Diego airport terminal, to board a plane to Washington DC.  This occurred in 1993.  This is an alternate history America where they could open a door after it’s already been shut to let a last minute passenger in.

Even a brown one.

PlayStation Home

Yes, where you, too can be hit on by fabulously anonymous denizens of the internet.

The launch is scheduled for today, December 11, for the PlayStation Home Beta.  I like the “beta” subtitle.

I’m looking forward to the place getting populated by more people, although I don’t know why.

I know I am not going to spend too long in the application itself.  I view it mainly as an interesting social experiment.  It’s as if a Sony exec asked, “If we add Second Life features to the demographics of PlayStation 3 owners, what will we get?” Continue reading
